SportsCafe Desk

Manchester Originals will be up against Northern Superchargers on August 17th in Manchester. A battle between modern-day heroes on the cards as Harry Brook and Philip Salt will lead their respective franchises in the match. This will also be a chance for Originals to tie their head-to-head record.

‌The time has come for another super Sunday in the fifth edition of the Hundred Men’s Competition, with the first fixture of the day to feature the Manchester Originals and Northern Superchargers to face off against each other at Old Trafford. There will be some iconic players who will be featuring in the game, but the two players who will be in the limelight are Philip Salt and Harry Brook. Both these players are not only the newest skippers of the franchise but are also claimed to be the future prospects of English cricket. This game is set to see a battle between these two incredible top-order batters who have been in incredible form this season as well.  While Salt has once again been impressive this season with 347 runs at a strike rate of 144.58, Brook has also given impressive performances in the middle order with 254 runs at a strike rate of 153.93.

Despite the terrific performances by their skipper, the overall performance of the Originals has been disappointing so far, as they are standing sixth on the points table with only one win and three losses to their name. Their performance in the last game was disappointing as well, where they crumbled under pressure against Welsh Fire in a low-scoring fixture. They will need to get some wins under their belt in their next four ventures to give themselves a chance in the playoffs.

The Northern Superchargers, on the other hand, are having a good tournament so far, having won three of their four games and are standing second on the points table with three wins and only one loss to their name.  Unlike the Originals, the Boys in Purple seemed to be prospering under Harry Brook, who has also led the team in 11 games and has only lost two games so far. They will be hoping they continue their consistency in the next few games and hopefully get their maiden top-three qualification in the season.

Form Guide

Manchester Originals have not shown a lot of consistency in the tournament, which also reflects on their recent form, having lost four of their last five games.

Northern Superchargers, on the other hand, have had a good run in the Hundred so far with four wins out of their last five games.

The two teams have a tight head-to-head record in the tournament, with Northern Superchargers just about holding the lead over Manchester Originals in the seven games they have played against each other

Pitch and Weather

The surface at Manchester is expected to be on the slower side, with pacers getting assistance with a lot of uneven bounce and seam movement.  The batters have struggled to score runs in the last two games that have been played this season, with Southern  Brave eking out a one-wicket win and the London Spirit failing to chase down a score of 163.

While the conditions are expected to be slightly cloudy at Manchester, there is a very minimal chance of rain at the venue with temperature probably being between 23-25 degrees Celsius.

Team News

Looking at how much success the seamers have had on this surface, the Originals might prefer another pace option and replace left-arm spinner Tom Hartley with George Garton.

The Superchargers are not expected to make any changes to their team going into the game.
