Match Report
England Women put in an all-round performance to beat West Indies Women by 59 runs in the second ODI at Grace Road in Leicester on Wednesday. Openers Tammy Beaumont and Amy Jones scored half-centuries while left-arm spinner Linsey Smith was the pick among the hosts’ bowlers with a spell of 3/35 in 10 overs as England took an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series.
Opting to bat on a placid surface, England openers Beaumont and Jones, who scored centuries in the last match, began cautiously but steadily to build a solid opening partnership. The pair added 101 runs, their second consecutive 100-plus partnership, scoring fifties, weathering West Indies’ initial burst and punishing anything loose. Jones looked fluent with her timing while Beaumont anchored with grace. Sciver-Brunt played with authority, lofting Matthews for a clean six over long-on, during her 38-ball 47 while Capsey’s 33 off 28 added late impetus. Despite a minor wobble in the middle overs, England’s total of 278/7 was well-rounded—powered by partnerships and intelligent rotation. Beaumont hit nine fours and two sixes to top-score in the match with 76 off 89 balls. West Indies skipper Hayley Matthews picked up 2/43 while leg-spinner Afy Fletcher also had two wickets to her name.
Chasing 279, West Indies began confidently, with Matthews once again showing class with drives through cover and square. Her 67, which included eight fours and a six, was filled with intent, but left-arm spinner Linsey Smith removed Qiana Joseph and then Zaida James in quick succession to trigger the visitors’ collapse. England’s bowlers shared the workload efficiently as Lauren Bell’s swing and Arlott’s pace variations ensured regular breakthroughs. Though Alleyne and Gajnabi fought back briefly, the lack of meaningful partnerships meant West Indies finished way short of the target as they were skittled out of 219 in the 47th over. Skipper Matthews’ all-round performance was the only bright spot for the visitors while the pace duo of Bell and Arlott chipped in with two wickets each to support Linsey Smith’s three-fer.
Player of the Match
Tammy Beaumont was declared the Player of the Match for anchoring the England innings while batting first and top-scoring in the contest with 76 off 89 balls.
