Match Report
England continued their dominant run over West Indies in the three-match ODI series with a comprehensive seven-wicket win over West Indies in the second game at the Sophia Gardens in Cardiff. Skipper Harry Brook led from the front during the chase hitting six fours and two sixes to remain unbeaten on 67 off 55 balls while Saqib Mahmood picked up 3/36 in his 10 overs to shine with the ball.
After opting to bowl first under overcast skies, England’s new-ball pair of Saqib Mahmood and Jamie Overton made full use of the conditions, keeping it tight and not allowing West Indies to a blazing start. Just as it looked like the opening pair of Brandon King and Evin Lewis would capitalise on their time spent in the middle, Mahmood struck twice removing King and Lewis to expose the West Indies’ fragile middle order. However, the visitors’ skipper Shai Hope attempted to rebuild, crafting a measured 42 with support from Keacy Carty, who added 29. But as it was with the openers, the pair could not build on their good starts as England’s bowlers continued to chip away with regular wickets. Adil Rashid’s introduction stifled the scoring further as he dismissed Amir Jangoo and Roston Chase with well-flighted leg-breaks as the Windies looked down the barrel. Though there was some resistance from Justin Greaves, who made 14 off 17, the other batters continued to come and depart on the face of some disciplined bowling from the home side. The West Indies’ innings stuttered to 218/9 in their allotted 50 overs —a total well below par on what turned into a good batting wicket.
England’s chase was authoritative from the outset. Ben Duckett (41) and Jamie Smith (33) provided a fluent 61-run opening stand, finding gaps with ease. Although both fell in quick succession, Joe Root and Harry Brook steadied the innings with risk-free strokeplay, rotating the strike effectively. Root departed for 28, but Buttler walked in and played with his characteristic calm and aggression. Brook showcased maturity beyond his years, pacing his innings smartly and pouncing on every scoring opportunity. Buttler hit four fours and a six in his unbeaten cameo of 39 off just 32 balls to hurry the proceedings as the host finished the match in the 39th over barely breaking a sweat in the chase. West Indies’ bowlers, barring a couple of isolated moments from Alzarri Joseph and Gudakesh Motie, never really looked threatening and finished with a wicket apiece. With another dominant win, England went 2-0 ahead in the three-match series with West Indies playing for pride in the last ODI at the Oval in London on Tuesday.
Player of the Match
England captain Harry Brook was declared the Player of the Match for anchoring the chase with an unbeaten 67 off 55 balls, a knock that included six fours and two sixes.
