Royals vs Warriors review

Guyana Amazon Warriors beat Barbados Royals by four wickets in the 21st CPL game in Barbados. Shai Hope, Dwaine Pretorius and Quentin Sampson ensured the target was chased down with two balls to spare as the Warriors continued their dominance and the Royals continued their winless streak.

‌Guyana Amazon Warriors won the toss and decided to put the Barbados Royals into bat. The decision seemed fruitful as the visitor lost an early wicket of Quinton de  Kock in the fourth over itself as he was a victim of a one-handed blinder by Moeen Ali in the slips. However, Brandon King played some attractive strokes towards the end of the power play to take the Royals to a decent score of 43/1. Though the powerplay was evenly matched, the Warriors spin duo of Imran Tahir and Gudakesh Motie created problems for the host as Motie ended Kadeem Alleyne’s miserable 11-ball stay in the seventh over, and Warriors captain Imran Tahir got the crucial wicket of King on a score of 39 off 27 in the next over. With only 22 runs coming in the next four overs, the home team was restricted to a score of 65/3 at the halfway stage. The struggles for the Royals did not end there as a couple of wickets fell straight after the break with Motie returning for a third over to dismiss Eathan Bosch, and Romario Shepherd cleaned up the dangerous Sherfane Rutherford with a brilliant yorker. Though Rassie van der Dussen tried his best to control the strike at one end and Royals skipper Rovman Powell managed to get some big hits, there were only 31 runs scored in the next five overs, which took the score to 96/5. It seemed like the Guyanese franchise would restrict the home team to a below-par score in the end, but van der Dussen and Powell decided to keep the fight alive. The duo had put on 82 runs for the sixth wicket before the South African batter was dismissed for 45 off 37 balls in the final over. This partnership ensured 69 runs came in the last five, with the Royals captain remaining unbeaten on 50 off 28 deliveries and the team ending their innings on a competitive total of 165/6.

The momentum of the last five overs was carried by the Barbados Royals bowlers as Eathan Bosch struck twice in the second over, with the wickets of Ben McDermott and Moeen Ali. Ramon Simmonds also joined the party with a couple of scalps, with Shimron Hetmyer and Hassan Khan being dismissed cheaply as well. Though there were a few great hits by Shai Hope in the power play, the Warriors were in a tricky position with the score reading 43/4. Despite the disappointing start to their chase, Hope, along with Dwaine Pretorius, steadied the ship after the power play. However, the visitors were still in a tough position at the halfway stage with the score at 68/4 with the required rate being close to 10 runs an over. While it seemed like the Royals were in a commanding position after the first half, Hope and Pretorious started to accumulate runs and find the boundaries in the second. The two batters had rescued the Warriors from a difficult position by putting on 82 runs for the fifth wicket before Pretorious was finally dismissed for 52 by Chris Green in the 14th over. Nevertheless, the game was in the Guyanese franchise's grasp with the score at 127/5 with the equation down to 39 off 30 balls. There was a moment where the Warriors started to worry as Bosch returned for one final over to dismiss Shepherd in the 16th, but Quentin Sampson came to Hope’s support towards the backend. While Hope remained unbeaten on a score of 62 off 49 deliveries, Sampson finished the innings with a cameo of 33 off 20 deliveries as he finished the game with a massive six with only two balls to spare and four wickets remaining. While this thrilling win was a moment to cherish for the Warriors, the Barbados franchise's search for their first win continues.

The player of the match was Dwaine Pretorius who impressed with a great spell of 1/25 in the first innings and formed a crucial stand with Shai Hope during a tough phase in the match.
