Tottenham Hotspur defeated Manchester United 1-0 in the Europa League final at San Mames Stadium, Bilbao, ending a 41-year European trophy drought. Brennan Johnson’s 42nd-minute goal secured Spurs’ first European title since 1984. Despite finishing 17th in the Premier League, they qualified for next season’s Champions League. Manchester United, placed 16th, missed out on European football.
In the UEFA Europa League final held at Bilbao’s San Mames Stadium, Tottenham Hotspur clinched a historic 1-0 win over Manchester United, marking their first European title in 41 years. Brennan Johnson’s first-half goal, assisted through a deflection off Luke Shaw, secured the win for Spurs. Despite Manchester United’s attempts to equalize, including Rasmus Hojlund’s close-range header and a late strike by Shaw, Tottenham’s defense held firm.
This victory guarantees Tottenham a place in next season’s UEFA Champions League, a major boost given their poor domestic season, where they sit 17th in the Premier League standings. Manchester United, currently 16th, miss out on European competition next season. Spurs' last major title was the League Cup in 2008, while their last European trophy was the 1984 UEFA Cup. They also avenged past European heartbreak, such as their 2019 Champions League final loss.
Manchester United, Europa League champions in 2016-17, have now lost all four encounters with Spurs this season and are winless in their last seven meetings. Historically, in 205 matches between the two, United have won 96 times, Spurs 58, and 51 ended in draws. This result highlights the need for major rebuilding at Old Trafford.
