However, Effenberg doubts Bayern’s Champions League chances amid a rebuilding phase under Vincent Kompany.
Coming to the future of Bayern Munich, club legend Stefan Effenberg believes star striker Harry Kane could leave as early as next summer, despite being under contract until 2027. Effenberg, in an interview with Kicker, expressed doubts over Bayern’s Champions League ambitions this season and pointed out that a major squad rebuild is already underway. Kane, who joined Bayern in 2023 as the most expensive signing in Bundesliga history, had a stunning debut campaign, scoring 36 league goals and winning the European Golden Shoe.
He ended his long-standing trophy drought by helping Bayern secure the Bundesliga title under manager Vincent Kompany. However, the exits of Thomas Müller and Leroy Sané, and captain Manuel Neuer’s one-year contract extension, have left the squad in transition. Although Kane recently stated he is “happy” at Bayern, persistent rumours about an exit clause continue to swirl.
Effenberg predicts a major shakeup, expecting Kane and Neuer to depart by 2026, creating space for a new leadership core. With Bayern adding Luis Díaz from Liverpool after missing out on Florian Wirtz and Nico Williams, they remain domestic favourites, but Effenberg feels they still lack the depth to contend seriously for the Champions League this season.
