During the summer transfer window of 2025, Liverpool transformed their approach and emerged as record spenders under new manager Arne Slot. The club spent £415m, including a British record £125m fee for Newcastle striker Alexander Isak, surpassing their previous cautious policies under Jurgen Klopp. Liverpool’s spending spree was possible due to stockpiled resources, increased commercial revenue, which rose to £308m, surpassing Manchester United for the first time, and more than £200m in player sales, including Darwin Nunez, Luis Diaz and Jarell Quansah.
The window saw key arrivals such as German playmaker Florian Wirtz for £100m, right-back Jeremie Frimpong from Bayer Leverkusen for £29.5m, and left-back Milos Kerkez for £40m. Liverpool also invested in forwards, signing Hugo Ekitike and finally sealing Isak’s record-breaking move after Newcastle brought in replacements Nick Woltemade (£69m) and Yoane Wissa (£55m).
One setback came when Crystal Palace pulled out of an agreed £35m deal for Marc Guehi, leaving Liverpool short of defensive depth. The spending spree was also shaped by tragedy, as Diogo Jota’s death in a car crash forced the club to reinforce their attack. Liverpool now enter their title defence with both immense investment and emotional weight.
