When the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) approved a proposal to move Villarreal’s La Liga match against Barcelona from Estadio de la Ceramica to the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami on 21 December, it sparked strong backlash from Real Madrid and fan groups. The RFEF’s plan, which still requires approval from FIFA and UEFA, would mark the first time a La Liga fixture is played outside Spain, with Miami already set to host seven matches during the 2026 World Cup.

Real Madrid issued a statement expressing their “strongest rejection” of the proposal, warning that holding the match abroad would set an “unacceptable precedent” with serious consequences for world football.
